Prime Minister Gaston Browne has paid tribute to Sir Garfield Sobers, describing the late Barbadian cricket legend as a towering Caribbean icon whose influence extended far beyond the cricket field and helped shape a generation of West Indians.
According to Antigua.news, Browne issued a formal statement on behalf of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, extending sincere condolences to the Government and people of Barbados, as well as to Sir Garfield's family and friends following his passing.
The Prime Minister reflected on Sobers' emergence during a defining moment in Caribbean history, as the region worked to forge its identity in the years following the decline of colonial rule.
"At a time when West Indian nationhood was taking form and colonialism was in retreat, one of the most outstanding athletes to emerge from the Anglo-Caribbean region was Garfield Sobers," Browne said.
Browne noted that Sir Garfield's extraordinary achievements earned him not only a knighthood but also the distinction of being declared a National Hero of Barbados. His popularity, the Prime Minister added, was so widespread that many parents throughout Antigua and Barbuda and across the Caribbean named their sons Garfield in his honour.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Sobers' remarkable cricketing accomplishments, including his then world-record Test score of 365 not out — a record that stood for decades — and his successful tenure as captain of the West Indies cricket team.
Browne said Sir Garfield embodied the determination, resilience and excellence of the Caribbean people, inspiring countless cricketers, diplomats, political leaders and sportsmen and women throughout the region.
Even after retiring from international cricket, Sobers remained one of the sport's most respected ambassadors, Browne said, continuing to command admiration as the game evolved through different formats.
"His legacy extends beyond statistics and records. Sir Garfield Sobers represented the very best of the Caribbean spirit, demonstrating exceptional leadership, sportsmanship and excellence throughout his life," the Prime Minister said.
Browne concluded his tribute with a prayer for the late cricket legend.
"May the soul of Sir Garfield Sobers rest in peace and rise in paradise," he said.
