Cricket West Indies (CWI) President Dr. Kishore Shallow has paid an emotional tribute to the late Sir Garfield Sobers, calling the Barbadian icon "the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen" and a figure whose influence extended far beyond sport to become a enduring symbol of Caribbean pride and identity.
According to Antigua.news, Shallow issued the statement following Sir Garfield's passing on Friday at the age of 89, saying the cricket legend's life had become inseparable from the hopes and aspirations of generations across the Caribbean.
"There are moments in the story of a people when the life of one individual becomes woven into the hopes, dreams, and identity of generations," Shallow said. "Today, the Caribbean mourns the passing of such an individual."
Shallow said Sir Garfield's extraordinary career not only transformed cricket but helped define the Caribbean's place on the global stage during a pivotal period in the region's history.
"There are champions. Then, there are those rare individuals who redefine the very meaning of greatness," he said. "Sir Garfield Sobers was the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen."
While acknowledging Sobers' brilliance with bat, ball and in the field, Shallow said his greatest legacy was the inspiration he provided to people across the Caribbean and its diaspora.
"He emerged from the Caribbean at a time when our region was finding its voice and asserting its place on the world stage," Shallow said. "Through his excellence, he gave millions across our islands and in the diaspora a renewed belief in what was possible."
Shallow added that Sobers demonstrated that greatness was never determined by the size of a nation or the circumstances of one's birth. "He showed that greatness was not confined by the size of our nations, the geography of our islands or the circumstances of our beginnings," he said.
The CWI President described Sir Garfield as more than a sporting hero — calling him a lasting symbol of Caribbean excellence, resilience and possibility whose achievements brought pride to Barbados and admiration from cricket fans worldwide.
Shallow also reflected on the personal impact Sobers had on his own life, recalling his time as a young cricketer competing in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Under-19 Cricket Tournament, during which he received guidance and encouragement directly from the legendary all-rounder.
"I remain grateful not only for that opportunity, but for the encouragement, wisdom and support he personally shared with me over the years," Shallow said. "His kindness and influence will forever remain a treasured part of my journey."
In closing his tribute, Shallow said Sir Garfield's passing marked the end of an extraordinary chapter in cricket history, while insisting his influence would endure.
"Sir Garfield Sobers has completed his final innings, but his legacy will forever endure in the hearts of our region, and the story of the cricketing world," he said.
On behalf of Cricket West Indies, Shallow extended condolences to Sir Garfield's family, the Government and people of Barbados, and cricket lovers across the globe mourning the loss of a man widely regarded as the finest all-round cricketer the sport has ever produced.
