Antiguan cultural icon Sir Clarence Leonard Emmanuel Edwards has cancelled all scheduled performances and public appearances for Carnival 2026 following a medical emergency that required immediate hospitalisation and treatment.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, Edwards said the decision came after consultation with his medical team, who have advised him to avoid all performance-related activities for a minimum of four to six weeks.
"Following a comprehensive evaluation, physicians have advised that I refrain from all performance-related activities for a minimum of four to six weeks," the statement read. "This recommendation has been made in the interest of protecting my health and ensuring a safe return to the stage."
The announcement confirms that Edwards — a celebrated figure in Antigua and Barbuda's cultural landscape and a key member of Red Hot & Burning Flames — will not take part in this year's Carnival festivities. He has long been a crowd favourite during the season.
Edwards acknowledged the impact his absence will have on fans, event promoters and partners, describing it as a decision that "was not easily made."
"I deeply value every opportunity to perform, especially during the carnival season that is fast approaching, and sincerely regret the disappointment this news may bring," he said.
Despite the setback, Edwards expressed optimism about making a full recovery and returning to the stage once cleared by his doctors. He also thanked supporters for their messages of concern and encouragement following his hospitalisation.
"I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support, understanding, and kindness shown during this time," he said. "While taking time away from the stage is difficult, the focus must remain on recovery."
The statement did not disclose the nature of the medical emergency or provide further details about his condition.
Edwards closed by expressing gratitude to fans for their patience, saying their encouragement "means more than words can express" as he works toward resuming public performances.
