The Antigua and Barbuda Cabinet is reviewing a US$100 million proposal from a consortium of international investors to develop a comprehensive horse racing and equine industry in the country. According to Antigua News Room, proponents say the project could position Antigua and Barbuda as the Caribbean's premier destination for horse racing, breeding and equine services.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant disclosed the details during Thursday's post-Cabinet media briefing, describing the investors' vision as an ambitious master plan for a fully integrated equine ecosystem designed to attract international investment, tourism and major racing events.
Merchant said the first phase of the proposed development carries an estimated price tag of approximately US$25 million. He emphasised that the project extends well beyond the construction of a racetrack.
The master plan, as outlined to Cabinet, encompasses an international-standard racecourse, a thoroughbred breeding centre, an equine veterinary hospital, a biosecurity and quarantine centre, education and training facilities, hospitality and tourism amenities, and supporting infrastructure. Together, these components are intended to establish Antigua and Barbuda as a regional hub for the equine industry.
Merchant said the investors presented several anticipated economic and social benefits, including new employment opportunities, increased visitor arrivals, expanded prospects for local businesses and the development of international partnerships. The proposal also includes professional training programmes and avenues for youth participation through equestrian sports and related industries.
Given the scale and complexity of the investment, Cabinet determined that further review is required before any decisions are taken. The investor group is expected to return for a series of follow-up presentations covering the project's financial model, regulatory framework, environmental considerations, implementation timeline and investment structure.
Merchant confirmed that Cabinet will examine those technical and operational details thoroughly before deciding whether to move forward with the proposed development.
