The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has endorsed plans for a modern Veterinary and Livestock Development Complex at Betty's Hope, describing the initiative as a transformative investment in the nation's food security.
According to Antigua.news, the project carries a price tag of EC$15 million, with the first phase set to include a modern abattoir capable of processing sheep, goats and pigs, as well as a dedicated poultry processing facility.
Officials outlined a broader vision for the complex that would bring veterinary services, livestock production, food processing, research, training and agribusiness development together under one integrated facility.
Government officials believe the project will strengthen domestic food production and improve food safety standards, while reducing the country's reliance on imported meat. Authorities also expect the complex to generate new employment opportunities and position Antigua and Barbuda as a regional leader in livestock production.
In a related move, Cabinet also endorsed the creation of an agricultural security framework designed to protect the nation's livestock assets, infrastructure and genetic resources.
