The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has launched pipe installation works along a section of Market Street, as part of a broader effort to strengthen the reliability of the water supply network serving St. John's City. According to Antigua.news, the project is being carried out by APUA's Horizontal Directional Drilling team, operating within the Water Business Unit.
The works are focused on the stretch between Newgate Street and Church Street. Upon completion, the project will enable the decommissioning of existing pipes along Newgate Street while establishing a new connection within the city's water distribution network.
APUA noted that St. John's City currently draws its water supply from the Grays Hill Reservoir. The upgrade, however, forms part of a wider contingency plan that will allow for additional support to be drawn from the Fort James Reverse Osmosis Plant when demand rises or operational challenges arise.
The authority described the works as a continuation of its ongoing investment in water infrastructure — one aimed at improving the system's capacity to maintain consistent supply during periods of heightened pressure.
Motorists and pedestrians in the area should expect minor traffic disruptions while works are underway. APUA is urging the public to exercise caution, adhere to posted signage, and cooperate with crews working along the roadway.
The authority extended its thanks to residents, businesses, and commuters for their patience as the project moves forward.
