The American University of Antigua College of Medicine has begun accepting transfer students into its preclinical and clinical programs, opening a new pathway for eligible medical students to complete their Doctor of Medicine degrees at the Antigua-based institution.

According to Antigua News Room, the expanded capacity covers the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 intakes, allowing qualified students from accredited U.S. medical schools and internationally recognised institutions to apply for advanced standing.

AUA President Dr. Peter Bell said the university had previously been unable to accommodate transfer students, but moved to expand the program following a surge of requests from students seeking to continue their medical education at AUA.

"We were approached by a large number of students who would like to come to AUA and have heard their requests, worked with our regulators and are now in the position to accept transfer students," Bell said.

Eligible students may be admitted into AUA's preclinical program in Antigua or, for those who have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, directly into the university's clinical program at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States.

The university said each transfer application will be reviewed individually to determine eligibility and appropriate placement within the curriculum. Admissions and academic staff will work closely with applicants throughout the process.

Bell described the development as "a monumental step" for the institution, saying it gives students another opportunity to complete their medical education at AUA.
