Antigua and Barbuda's Zonique Charles delivered a standout performance at the OECS Championships in St. Kitts, claiming the silver medal in the women's javelin while breaking a long-standing national record.
According to Antigua News Room, Charles produced a throw of 42.92 metres in the senior competition, surpassing the previous national record of 41.11 metres. The achievement marks a significant milestone for the young athlete, who also holds a silver medal from the CARIFTA Games.
The record she eclipsed had stood for nearly two decades. Amanda Edward set the old mark of 41.11 metres in 2007 at the CARIFTA Games in Turks and Caicos, where she, too, earned a silver medal in the event.
Charles' record-breaking throw not only secured Antigua and Barbuda a silver medal at the OECS Championships but also established a new national benchmark in the women's javelin, raising the bar for future competitors representing the twin-island nation.
