Chester Hughes, Deputy General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers' Union (ABWU), graduated Tuesday with a Bachelor of Laws — LLB (Hons), Upper Second-Class Honours — from Arden University in the United Kingdom, marking a significant milestone in his academic and professional career.
According to Antigua News Room, Hughes celebrated the occasion with family and friends in the UK following the graduation ceremony, which represented the culmination of years of dedicated study undertaken while he continued to serve in one of the Union's most senior leadership roles.
Reflecting on the achievement, Hughes described his academic journey as both "challenging and rewarding," adding that balancing the demands of work, study, and personal life required "discipline, resilience, and determination."
He noted that while the programme introduced him to many unfamiliar areas of study that initially appeared daunting, each module contributed to expanding his knowledge, strengthening his understanding, and building his confidence. The experience, he said, equipped him with valuable skills and insights while inspiring him to approach the next chapter of his professional journey with "enthusiasm and purpose."
The ABWU extended its congratulations to Hughes, stating that his success stands as a testament to his dedication to personal growth and his commitment to strengthening the labour movement through education and principled leadership.
The Union's executive, staff, and membership expressed confidence that the academic achievement will further enhance Hughes' ability to serve workers, particularly in the areas of labour law, industrial relations, collective bargaining, and social justice.
Hughes is expected to depart during the summer to pursue the Bar Training Course, the next step in his legal training. The ABWU wished him continued success as he advances his legal career in service of justice and the working class.
The Union described his achievement as not only a source of pride for the organisation, but also an inspiration to workers across Antigua and Barbuda to pursue lifelong learning and professional excellence.
