A local beekeeper is urging Antiguans to replace refined sugar with raw honey this Nutrition Month, arguing that the two sweeteners affect the body in fundamentally different ways.
According to Antigua Observer, Jamal Philip, owner and operator of Beecanic Enterprises, says honey's nutritional profile makes it the superior choice over refined sugar. However, Philip acknowledges a significant challenge standing in the way of wider adoption — local production simply cannot keep up with demand.
As reported by Antigua Observer, Philip, an apiculturist by trade, is using Nutrition Month as a platform to raise public awareness about the health distinctions between the two sweeteners and to encourage consumers to make more informed dietary choices.
While Philip advocates strongly for raw honey as a healthier alternative, he concedes that the gap between what local beekeepers can produce and what the population requires remains a pressing concern for the industry.
