Prime Minister Gaston Browne has urged motorists to slow down and drive responsibly following a traffic accident that left the nation's top cyclist, Tahje Browne, seriously injured but alive.
According to Antigua News Room, the Prime Minister addressed the incident during his Browne and Browne radio programme on Saturday, revealing that the young cyclist had been struck by a vehicle earlier that morning. Browne described the crash as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences reckless driving and excessive speed can carry.
"Our best cyclist got hit by a vehicle this morning," the Prime Minister said, adding that the incident could easily have proven fatal. He noted that Tahje was "lucky to be alive" given the manner in which the vehicle reportedly spun out of control.
Browne expressed relief that the cyclist's injuries were not considered life-threatening. He also criticised the motorist involved for allegedly fleeing the scene, calling the action unfortunate, and urged the individual to present themselves to law enforcement authorities.
Using the incident as a broader road safety warning, the Prime Minister specifically cautioned drivers of Toyota Vitz vehicles against speeding. He said he had long heard concerns about those vehicles becoming unstable at high speeds, noting that some residents avoid travelling in them for that very reason. He urged Vitz drivers to recognise the limitations of their vehicles and operate them within safe conditions.
"No one should be speeding on our roads and putting people's lives at risk," Browne said.
The accident has prompted concern across the sporting community, with supporters and fellow athletes rallying behind Tahje Browne and expressing hope for his full recovery.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
