ST. JOHN'S, Antigua — Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced Saturday that construction on the Fort James Renaissance Park is expected to begin by September, as the government moves forward with plans to transform the historic site into a major tourism and recreational destination.
According to Antigua News Room, Browne made the announcement during the Browne and Browne radio programme, revealing that the government has earmarked $5 million from the settlement of a tax dispute with Sandals Resorts to fund the project's launch.
"We have allocated $5 million from the Sandals settlement to begin the Fort James Renaissance project," Browne said, adding that contracts are expected to be awarded in the coming months as preparations advance.
The Prime Minister described the development as a transformational project that will preserve public access to the area while creating new opportunities for economic activity, recreation and tourism. Plans for the site include beach enhancement works, restaurants, recreational facilities and improvements to the surrounding environment.
Browne also outlined plans for Barnacle Point and an artificial reef project intended to serve as an environmental and educational attraction. Reef modules have already been shipped from the United States, he said, and officials hope to have the attraction in place before Antigua and Barbuda hosts the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting next year.
"We want to create a space that people can enjoy while preserving the history and natural beauty of Fort James," Browne said.
The Prime Minister framed the project as part of a broader effort to diversify the country's tourism product beyond traditional beach offerings and increase visitor spending by developing new attractions. He noted that the government is continuing discussions on complementary investments along the western coastline, with an emphasis on maintaining public beach access.
Fort James, one of Antigua and Barbuda's most recognizable historic landmarks, has long been identified as an area with significant tourism potential due to its beachfront location and historical importance.
Officials expect the project to generate employment during both the construction and operational phases, while establishing a new recreational hub for residents and visitors alike.
