Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Hon. Michael Freeland, met with Antigua and Barbuda's newly appointed Chinese Ambassador, Her Excellency Jiang Wei, in a courtesy call that produced wide-ranging discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding tourism opportunities between the two countries.
The meeting covered cooperation in tourism, culture, sports, and connectivity, with both officials identifying new avenues to promote Antigua and Barbuda within the Chinese market.
Minister Freeland stressed the importance of raising Antigua and Barbuda's profile in China and discussed how the Chinese Embassy could help showcase the destination to potential visitors. Talks also explored how China could continue supporting the island nation's tourism sector through cultural exchanges, sporting initiatives, and strategic partnerships.
Improving travel connectivity between the two countries emerged as another key priority. Both parties examined opportunities to strengthen travel links, including how China could leverage the soon-to-be-launched direct air service between the United Arab Emirates and Antigua and Barbuda. That route is expected to open a new gateway for travelers from Asia and the broader region.
Minister Freeland noted that Antigua and Barbuda and China have maintained decades of friendship and partnership, expressing optimism about deepening those ties through initiatives that benefit both nations.
Ambassador Jiang and Minister Freeland agreed to maintain ongoing dialogue as they work to advance shared priorities and identify practical opportunities for collaboration. The meeting underscored both countries' commitment to fostering stronger diplomatic, economic, cultural, and tourism relations in the years ahead.
