The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has congratulated the national Under-20 men's football team on its historic qualification for the CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship, calling the achievement a major milestone for football in the country.
According to Antigua.news, Cabinet received a joint presentation from the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) and the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association during Thursday's meeting, highlighting the significance of the team's qualification for the tournament, scheduled to be held in Mexico from July 24 to August 9.
Antigua and Barbuda is the only member state of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to secure a place in the competition and one of only three Caribbean nations to qualify. Cabinet hailed the accomplishment as a testament to the talent, commitment and discipline of the country's young footballers, coaches and administrators.
Twenty-one young Antiguans and Barbudans are expected to represent the nation at the championship, offering an opportunity to showcase local talent on the international stage while inspiring future generations of athletes.
Cabinet commended the players, coaching staff and the ABFA for what it described as an outstanding achievement and pledged its full support for the team's participation in the tournament.
The Football Association also used the occasion to outline its long-term vision for the sport, including plans to strengthen club football, improve infrastructure and expand youth participation opportunities across the country.
The meeting also featured extensive discussions on the future use of the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) for Premier Division football. Sports Minister Dwayne George led deliberations on the issue, with talks centering on how football and cricket can coexist at the historic venue while preserving the quality of the facility for national, regional and international competitions.
Representatives of both associations acknowledged the ARG's importance to Antigua and Barbuda's sporting landscape and agreed that effective scheduling, maintenance and facility management would be critical to meeting the needs of both sports.
Following extensive debate and the expression of strongly held views by Cabinet members, it was agreed that Premier League football will return to the Antigua Recreation Ground for the upcoming September to December season. The arrangement will operate as a pilot programme under a new management framework designed to assess its effectiveness and determine its long-term viability.
Cabinet also considered recommendations for the establishment of a dedicated management structure to oversee scheduling, maintenance and operational planning at the venue — a proposal viewed as an important step toward maximising the ARG's use while maintaining its status as a premier sporting facility.
Cabinet praised both associations for their collaborative approach and reaffirmed the Government's commitment to supporting sport as a vehicle for youth development, national pride, economic activity and social advancement. The Government also extended best wishes to the Under-20 squad as preparations continue ahead of the CONCACAF championship in Mexico.
