The government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a new management structure for the country's fisheries complexes, transferring operational control to Antigua Fisheries Limited.

The decision affects facilities at Point, Parham and Urlings in Antigua, as well as the fisheries complex in Barbuda. The facilities were previously managed by the Fisheries Division within the Ministry of Agriculture.

Cabinet approved the transfer following a review of the condition and management arrangements of the complexes at Thursday's Cabinet meeting. Officials determined that Antigua Fisheries Limited should assume full administrative responsibility for the facilities, citing the company's experience and institutional capacity to oversee operations and implement improvements.

The move is intended to improve operational efficiency, strengthen accountability and enhance services provided to fishers, vendors and other users of the facilities.

As part of the transition, Cabinet also approved a new board of directors for Antigua Fisheries Limited. Hassett Julian will serve as chair of the board, which will provide oversight and strategic direction for the organisation.

The new governance arrangement is expected to support the modernisation and long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector, while ensuring the complexes remain properly maintained and responsive to the needs of fishing communities across both islands.
