The government has approved plans to reclaim approximately three acres of land at Fort James as part of a broad redevelopment initiative aimed at transforming the historic site into a major recreational and entertainment destination.
According to Antigua News Room, the proposal was outlined during Friday's post-Cabinet media briefing, where Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant detailed the government's vision for the future of Fort James Beach.
Merchant said the reclaimed land will support the creation of an expanded leisure district featuring recreational facilities, entertainment venues and additional public spaces. "Cabinet also endorsed plans for the reclamation and development of approximately three acres of land in the area to expand the recreational and entertainment district," he said.
Among the planned features is an amphitheater and event space designed to host cultural performances, community activities and tourism-related events. The development will also incorporate landscaped green spaces and park areas for use by both residents and visitors.
Shoreline protection measures will accompany the project, Merchant said, including the installation of groins, beach replenishment works and, in certain areas, retaining walls to address coastal erosion concerns.
The redevelopment forms part of the government's wider strategy to preserve Fort James' historical significance while generating new economic opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs.
Officials confirmed that surveys and development plans are already underway, with further details expected to be released in the coming weeks.
