The Antigua and Barbuda National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association (ABNOC/CGA) has confirmed its participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026.
According to Antigua News Room, a 13-member squad is expected to represent the twin-island nation across four disciplines: Athletics, Boxing, Track Cycling, and Swimming. The final team will be formally confirmed once the Games transition from entry by number to entry by name.
"We are at the stage of entry by number, which identifies the sporting disciplines we are expecting to participate in. The team will be confirmed when we reach the protocol of entry by name," said Cliff Williams, Secretary General of the CGA.
The Glasgow Games have been scaled back to 10 sports as a cost-saving measure following the withdrawal of the Australian state of Victoria from its hosting bid in 2023. That departure left Scottish organisers with a reduced timeline and tighter budget, prompting the streamlined programme to ensure the event could proceed.
Karen Joseph, 3rd Vice President of the ABNOC/CGA and a former national netball star, has been appointed Chef de Mission. She will lead the Antiguan and Barbudan delegation, overseeing registration and final preparations. The ABNOC/CGA cited her leadership experience as making her a strong mentor for the next generation of athletes.
ABNOC/CGA President Hon. E. P. Chet Greene struck an ambitious tone regarding the association's expectations for competing athletes. "We encourage the National Federations to put their best foot forward by submitting the best athletes with focused preparation. We are no longer taking athletes to events to participate but rather to compete, to be competitive," he said.
On the diplomatic front, the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting will convene on 22 July 2026 in Glasgow, organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat in partnership with Commonwealth Sport and the Scottish Government. The ABNOC/CGA expressed hope that Antigua and Barbuda's new Sports Minister would attend. The association added that it will continue to monitor any operational guidance issued by organisers in the lead-up to the Games.
The ABNOC/CGA has indicated it will announce the final team composition and provide further updates as the entry process advances.
