The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has finalized arrangements to begin removing fuel from a leaking storage tank at the former Friars Hill Power Station, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing containment and cleanup operation.
According to Antigua.news, APUA confirmed in a Monday update that a local fuel contractor has agreed to accept the fuel, with preparations now underway to safely remove and transport the remaining contents from the affected tank.
Containment measures put in place earlier in the response effort remain effective, officials say, as authorities continue working to manage the situation and minimize environmental risks to the surrounding area.
Once the fuel transfer is complete, APUA says attention will shift to the removal and disposal of materials used during the containment and cleanup phases of the operation.
The utility authority says it is working in close coordination with the Department of Environment, the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the Central Board of Health, the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), and several other agencies. Officials say all cleanup and disposal activities are being carried out in accordance with established environmental and public health standards.
APUA reiterated its commitment to handling the matter safely and responsibly, while maintaining ongoing coordination with the relevant regulatory and emergency management bodies throughout the process.
The Authority also extended thanks to members of the public for their patience and continued support as response efforts at the former power station site proceed.
