Former national cricketer and New Winthorpes Lions captain Nino Henry is calling on authorities to stage more local cricket matches at Antigua's premier venues, following last Saturday's Super 40 final at the historic Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG).
According to Antigua Observer, Henry — a former Combined Campuses and Colleges player — believes that cricketers at the local level stand to benefit significantly from the experience of competing at top-tier facilities, rather than reserving those grounds solely for international fixtures.
Henry's appeal comes in the wake of the Super 40 final, which was held at the iconic ARG, one of the Caribbean's most storied cricket grounds. The former captain argued that waiting for international matches to bring players onto such stages is a missed opportunity for the development of local talent.
By regularly exposing domestic cricketers to high-quality venues, Henry contends, the standard of local competition can be elevated and players can better prepare themselves for higher levels of the game.
His comments have added fresh momentum to a broader conversation about how Antigua and Barbuda's cricketing infrastructure can be better leveraged to nurture homegrown talent throughout the year, not only when international eyes are on the island.
