Spirit Airlines, the ultra-low-cost carrier credited with reshaping budget air travel in the United States, has permanently shut down all operations following its second bankruptcy filing, ending more than three decades in the aviation industry.
According to Antigua.news, the airline commenced an "orderly wind-down" effective May 2, 2026, immediately canceling all flights and instructing passengers not to travel to airports. The company simultaneously suspended its customer service operations.
Spirit acknowledged the gravity of the moment in a statement. "It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately," the company said.
The sudden closure has left thousands of passengers stranded across the United States, with all bookings halted. Customers who booked directly through the airline are expected to receive refunds, while those who purchased through travel agents or third-party platforms must seek reimbursement through those channels or through bankruptcy proceedings.
The collapse puts an estimated 17,000 jobs at risk, spanning airline staff and contractors. Industry analysts warn that the removal of Spirit's low-cost capacity from the market could drive airfares higher across the United States.
