The Fisheries Division of Antigua and Barbuda has announced the start of annual closed seasons for two key marine species, effective May 1, as part of ongoing efforts to protect fish populations during critical spawning periods.
According to Antigua.news, the harvesting of Caribbean spiny lobster is prohibited from May 1 through June 30, while a separate ban on parrotfish — commonly known locally as "chub" — runs from May 1 through July 31.
Authorities are reminding fishers, vendors, and the general public that catching, selling, purchasing, or even possessing these species during the closed seasons is illegal. Violations carry significant penalties, including fines of up to EC$50,000.
The Fisheries Division states that the measures form part of a broader commitment to supporting the recovery of marine stocks and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the country's fishing industry.
Officials are urging full compliance, emphasising that protecting species during their spawning cycles is essential to maintaining healthy fish populations and preserving the livelihoods of those who depend on the sector.
