The Antigua and Barbuda Handball Association has announced the revival of the sport nationally, with both male and female national teams set to compete in their first regional international tournament. According to Antigua News Room, the teams are participating in the IHF Beach Handball Tournament and World Cup qualifier in St. Kitts, scheduled for April 23–26, 2026.
After nearly a decade of limited activity as a member association of the National Olympic Committee, the association's renewed focus on Beach Handball has reignited interest and participation across the twin-island nation. The sport was originally introduced through the vision of ABNOC President Hon. E. P. Chet Greene and has since been carried forward by Cliff Williams and other committed development figures.
The association assembled a delegation of 20 athletes — ten men and ten women — accompanied by five officials. Funding for the tournament participation came through an IHF Developing Nations grant. The IHF also provided direct coaching support, including the services of Mr. Olando Garcia from Puerto Rico, who helped prepare the athletes and assisted in developing a long-term competition development plan for Antigua and Barbuda.
Both teams were formed approximately two months ago through an intensive drafting and training programme, incorporating sessions on both beach and hardcourt surfaces. Female athletes were recruited largely from Netball and Volleyball, while male athletes came from Cricket, Baseball, Volleyball, and other local sporting backgrounds.
The association credited NOC Vice President and Netball President Karen Joseph with playing an instrumental role in launching the initiative, and extended special thanks to Keston Daley for his dedication in training the athletes. The IHF was also acknowledged for its financial and technical support throughout the process.
On the opening day of competition, the men's team faces St. Kitts at 9:00 a.m., while the women's team takes on the USA at 12:20 p.m. Live streaming details are expected to be shared once available.
