The Prices and Consumer Affairs Division has issued a public advisory warning that Toyota is recalling 73,528 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles from the 2023 to 2025 model years — a recall that extends to Antigua and Barbuda. According to Antigua News Room, the recall stems from a defect in which the backup pedestrian warning sound may be too quiet, potentially violating federal safety standards.

The affected vehicles may fail to emit a sufficiently loud pedestrian warning sound when operating in reverse. This deficiency places the vehicles in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 141, which establishes minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has assigned recall numbers 26TB08 and 26TA08 to the campaign.

Owners of affected vehicles will not bear any costs associated with the repair. Toyota dealers will install a complimentary software update to correct the pedestrian warning sound. Owners are expected to receive notification letters by late May 2026.

The Prices and Consumer Affairs Division has reminded the public that under the Consumer Protection Act, consumers are not required to pay for any repairs related to a manufacturer's safety recall.
