The Antigua Public Utilities Authority is in the final phase of a significant water infrastructure upgrade in the Point area of St. John's, as the authority pushes to strengthen the reliability of the island's distribution network.
APUA's Water Business Unit is installing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes along a section of Newgate Street, running from the site formerly known as Barnes Funeral Home to Cross Street. HDPE pipes are prized for their durability and resistance to leaks, making them a preferred material for long-term infrastructure works.
The project forms part of APUA's ongoing programme to replace aging pipelines and reduce the frequency of water service disruptions across the capital.
With the works entering their final stage, motorists are advised to expect temporary traffic delays in the affected area. Officials warn that portions of the roadway may be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic, and drivers are urged to exercise caution when passing through.
APUA has acknowledged the disruption caused by the works, including the impact on road surfaces, and confirmed it is coordinating closely with the Ministry of Works to ensure full restoration of the affected roads once the project is complete.
The authority has thanked residents and commuters for their patience, noting that the completed upgrade will deliver a more reliable and efficient water supply to the capital.
