ST. JOHN'S, Antigua — Sports Minister Daryll S. Matthew has commended Antigua and Barbuda's young athletes for their performances at the 53rd CARIFTA Games, citing multiple medal victories and a string of personal bests achieved across the team.
According to Antigua News Room, Matthew issued a statement welcoming the athletes home and singled out sprinter Tyra Fenton for particular praise. Fenton claimed two gold medals in the 100m and 200m events, adding a bronze in the 400m to round out an impressive individual campaign.
The minister also recognised Zonique Charles, who earned a silver medal in the javelin, and Maliek Francis, who secured bronze in the same discipline.
Matthew said the results reflected the dedication and discipline of the country's young competitors, noting that several team members achieved personal bests during the competition. Among those cited were Ryan Aikin, Shaquan Garding, Jaeda Pigott, Shawn-Ze Joseph, Elite Thomas, Fenton, and Geron Henry.
He extended his appreciation to both the athletes and coaching staff, commending their efforts in representing Antigua and Barbuda on the regional stage.
The minister described the overall campaign as a success for the nation, pointing to the podium finishes and measurable performance improvements as indicators of continued progress in the country's athletics programme.
