Prime Minister Gaston Browne has pledged that his administration will "invest heavily" in young sprint star Tyra Fenton, following her standout three-medal performance at the 2025 CARIFTA Games in Grenada.
According to Antigua News Room, Browne made the commitment during his weekly radio programme, speaking shortly after Fenton's 100 metres victory on Saturday. "We're going to invest heavily in her," he said. "She has the full support of my administration."
Fenton delivered one of the most impressive individual performances by an Antiguan athlete at the regional championships, held at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium. She claimed gold in the Under-17 girls' 100 metres and followed that with another gold in the 200 metres, before rounding out her campaign with a bronze in the 400 metres — a three-medal haul that underscored both her explosive speed and her capacity across distances.
Her performances have firmly established her among the top young track and field athletes in the Caribbean.
Browne confirmed that Fenton has already been awarded an athletic scholarship, though her family has chosen for her to complete her secondary education in Antigua before pursuing studies abroad. "Her mom says that she wants her to finish high school here," he said, noting that the transition to college is likely about a year away.
The Prime Minister added that discussions are ongoing regarding potential institutions overseas, with the government prepared to assist in identifying the best opportunities to support her continued athletic and academic development.
Fenton's CARIFTA campaign has positioned her as a leading figure in Antigua and Barbuda's next generation of track and field talent.
