Antigua and Barbuda opened the 39th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships in Martinique on a high note Sunday, with two silver medals and seven swimmers advancing to finals on the opening day of competition.
Madison MacMillan claimed silver in the Girls 15–17 800m freestyle with a time of 9:32, while Ellie Shaw followed with silver in the 200m breaststroke, finishing in 2:43. The performances were among several personal best times posted by members of the 14-strong national squad across the day's events.
Sports Minister Daryll Matthew praised the team's efforts in an official statement. "On behalf of the Ministry of Sports, I congratulate Team Antigua and Barbuda on an excellent showing on Day 1 at the 39th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships," he said.
Matthew singled out each medallist for recognition. "Seven swimmers advancing to the finals is a remarkable achievement. Kudos to Anya DeGannes on her gold medal and age-group record, and to Madison MacMillan and Ellie Shaw for earning silver. The nation is proud of you all," he added.
The results mark an encouraging start for the national team as competition continues at the regional championships.
