Antiguan sprinter Tyra Fenton has claimed gold in the Under-17 girls' 100 metres final at the 53rd CARIFTA Games, edging The Bahamas' Jazae Johnson by the narrowest of margins after both athletes clocked 11.30 seconds at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in St. George's, Grenada. According to Antigua.news, the result was decided by photo finish, with Fenton getting the verdict over Johnson, who was awarded silver.
The Bahamas' Brion Ward finished third in 11.63 seconds, followed by Jamaica's Azaria Harris in fourth place with a time of 11.73 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago's Jael Peters rounded out the top five, crossing the line in 11.87 seconds.
The 100 metres gold capped a historic day for the St. Anthony's Secondary School student, who earlier claimed bronze in the Under-17 girls' 400 metres final in a championship record time of 52.62 seconds.
Fenton had set the tone in the morning session, winning her 400 metres semi-final heat in 55.51 seconds before posting a personal best of 11.44 seconds to win her 100 metres preliminary heat — a performance that signalled her intent ahead of the showpiece final.
