Antigua and Barbuda has opened 2026 with its strongest January tourism performance on record, posting historic highs across cruise, air, and yachting arrivals. According to Antigua.news, the milestone figures signal a dramatic acceleration in the twin-island nation's tourism growth.
Cruise arrivals led the surge, with 197,206 passengers recorded in January 2026 — the highest January figure ever — up from 173,266 in January 2025 and a staggering climb from just 48,750 in January 2022.
Air arrivals also reached a new benchmark, rising to 36,052 visitors compared to 34,365 in January 2025, continuing a steady upward trend in stay-over tourism. The yachting sector added to the record-setting month, registering 3,633 arrivals — another January high and a further affirmation of Antigua's standing as a premier sailing destination.
Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez attributed the results to coordinated, strategic efforts across the industry. "These figures are historic. To see record-breaking performance across cruise, air, and yachting in a single month speaks to the strength of our tourism product," he said.
Fernandez noted that the growth stems from targeted investments in airlift capacity, strengthened cruise partnerships, and sustained marketing campaigns in key source markets.
The data highlights the value of a diversified tourism strategy. Cruise arrivals continue to drive overall visitor volume, while rising air passenger numbers reflect growing demand from higher-spending stay-over tourists. The yachting sector, though smaller in scale, maintains a niche and lucrative role in the overall picture.
With the year off to a record start, officials are optimistic that 2026 could rank among the strongest tourism years in the country's history. Fernandez stressed that the priority now is sustaining that momentum and ensuring the benefits are broadly felt.
"Our goal is not just growth, but sustainable growth that benefits all Antiguans and Barbudans," he said.
The record January performance positions Antigua and Barbuda firmly among the Caribbean's leading tourism destinations as the sector looks ahead to the months to come.
