The North Sound drag racing facility is set for a significant upgrade after Cabinet approved a new contract aimed at improving safety and boosting the venue's value as a recreational and tourism asset.
The government has entered into an agreement with a Chinese construction firm to carry out the works. Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed the deal, stating that the primary objective is to significantly improve safety at the facility.
"The government of Antigua and Barbuda has entered into a contractual agreement… for the repaving of the North Sound racetrack with the primary objective of significantly improving safety at that facility," Merchant said.
Located near the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the track has grown steadily in popularity, drawing large crowds for both competitive racing events and family outings. Merchant noted that the venue now attracts thousands of racing enthusiasts and families who use it as a key recreational space.
The upgrade will include resurfacing the track and installing enhanced safety features designed to better protect both drivers and spectators. Work is expected to begin within two to three weeks, once final arrangements are made with stakeholders in the racing community.
"Public Works… expect to see some work starting within two to three weeks… once arrangements have been made with the racing fraternity," Merchant said.
Officials say the redevelopment is part of broader efforts to modernise key recreational infrastructure. The improvements are expected to bring the facility closer to modern standards as its use continues to grow, while also strengthening its potential as a tourism offering.
