The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has signed a contract with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to repave the North Sound Drag Racing Track, in a move aimed at significantly improving safety at the popular motorsport venue.

Situated east of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the North Sound racetrack has grown into a major hub for racing enthusiasts, regularly drawing large crowds of spectators and families. That growing popularity has made upgrades a matter of urgency, as the facility works to safely accommodate increasing demand.

Cabinet has designated the rehabilitation of the track as a priority. Plans centre on resurfacing the racing strip and introducing enhanced safety measures designed to better protect both drivers and patrons.

Officials say the project forms part of a broader government effort to strengthen recreational infrastructure across the country, while promoting safe and controlled environments for motorsport activities.

The upgraded facility is also expected to elevate the overall experience for users, while supporting youth engagement and the continued development of motorsport in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Government has maintained that sustained investment in public recreational spaces remains critical to national development — ensuring facilities are safe, modern, and accessible to all.
