Nearly 700 young athletes are expected to take part in this year's National Interschool Championships, with officials describing the upcoming meet as one of the largest in modern times.
The competition is scheduled to run from March 12 to March 15 at the YASCO grounds. The championships were highlighted during the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing, where Cabinet members pledged their support and encouraged the public to attend.
Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, said the event's marketing team visited Cabinet to seek their backing. "The marketing team of the upcoming National Interschool Championships visited Cabinet to solicit their support in marketing the event, which is anticipated to be the largest in modern times with near 700 athletes participating," Merchant said.
Cabinet members responded enthusiastically. "Members were excited to participate and pledged their individual support and attendance at the event," Merchant said.
The championships rank among the most anticipated events on the national school sports calendar, bringing together student-athletes from across Antigua and Barbuda for several days of track and field competition.
The general public is encouraged to come out and cheer on the competitors. "The Cabinet sends its best wishes and success to all of the athletes," Merchant said.
