A new government-owned concrete block-making facility is set to begin operations in North Sound within the next two to three months, according to Antigua Observer. The initiative aims to significantly reduce construction costs for subsidised housing while also providing relief to the broader public.
As reported by Antigua Observer, Minister Rawdon Turner, Chairman of the National Housing Development and Urban Renewal Company, announced the upcoming launch of the facility. The plant is expected to play a central role in driving down expenses associated with government housing projects, making homeownership more accessible for residents.
Beyond cost savings, the concrete block-making facility is also anticipated to generate employment opportunities, offering a dual benefit for the local economy. By producing materials domestically, the government aims to reduce dependence on imported construction supplies, which have contributed to elevated building costs across the country.
The North Sound plant represents a broader push by the administration to address housing affordability challenges facing many Antiguans and Barbudans. Officials have signalled that the facility will serve not only subsidised housing programmes but also offer potential benefits to members of the general public seeking more affordable construction materials.
