A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway off the coast of Guyana after the passenger ferry MV Barima capsized during an overnight voyage, with 116 passengers and crew on board.
According to Antigua.news, the vessel encountered difficulties and transmitted a distress call late Saturday before overturning near the mouth of the Pomeroon River. The ferry was travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma when the incident occurred.
Authorities have confirmed that 53 people have been rescued so far. Emergency response teams, including the Guyana Coast Guard and other maritime agencies, were rapidly deployed to the scene and continue to search for those who remain unaccounted for.
Medical teams have been placed on standby to treat survivors as they are brought ashore.
