The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is in discussions with one of China's leading ophthalmic institutions over a partnership aimed at expanding vision care services, building local medical capacity and improving access to specialised eye treatment across the twin-island nation.
Health Minister Michael Joseph recently travelled to China to visit the HE Vision Group, accompanied by Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre Medical Director Dr. Shivon Belle-Javis and Antigua and Barbuda's Ambassador to the People's Republic of China, Clement Antonio.
The delegation toured the institution's community clinics, hospitals and university facilities under the guidance of Dr. Wei He, gaining direct exposure to eye care delivery at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Officials also examined the HE Vision Group's integrated model of patient care, medical education and research — an approach that has helped establish it among China's foremost ophthalmic providers.
Minister Joseph described the visit as a significant step toward meaningful improvements in local eye care. "We were particularly impressed with the comprehensive services offered by the HE Vision Group and their commitment to training the next generation of eye care professionals," he said.
Among the areas discussed was the possibility of the institution's university offering scholarships to Antiguans and Barbudans wishing to pursue studies in optometry. The two sides also explored the provision of modern equipment to support expanded eye screening services nationwide.
The Minister highlighted the institution's strong focus on education and professional development as central to its success, noting its role in producing highly trained specialists and driving innovation in ophthalmic medicine.
The proposed collaboration also envisions upgrades to Antigua and Barbuda's eye care infrastructure and broader access to specialised treatment for residents.
The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Health's longer-term goal of establishing a regional eye hospital in Antigua and Barbuda to serve patients from across the Caribbean. Minister Joseph emphasised that investing in education, advanced technology and strategic international partnerships remains essential to modernising the country's healthcare system and delivering world-class eye care services to the population.
