The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda (RPFAB) has announced enhanced security measures for Carnival 2026, encompassing increased patrols, random stop-and-search operations, and a zero-tolerance stance on illegal weapons.
The heightened security operation will run throughout the festival, from July 25th to August 4th, with the aim of ensuring a safe environment for residents and visitors alike.
Anyone found carrying an illegal firearm, ammunition, or any offensive weapon — including knives, machetes, cleavers, scissors, pieces of iron, wood, or any object intended to cause harm — will be arrested. The Police Administration also reminded the public that the wearing of ski masks is prohibited during Carnival, warning that violators may face police action under the law.
Beyond enforcement, police are encouraging the public to take personal safety precautions throughout the festival. Revellers are advised to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewellery, and carry only what cash they need. The use of electronic payment methods is recommended wherever possible.
Additional safety tips include exercising caution at automated teller machines, avoiding walking alone in isolated or poorly lit areas after events, and limiting distractions such as mobile phone use or wearing headphones at high volume while walking.
Parents and caregivers are specifically urged to keep children and elderly relatives within sight at all times, and to agree on a designated meeting point in case of separation.
Homeowners are reminded to secure their properties before heading out to festivities. Motorists are urged to lock their vehicles, avoid leaving valuables in plain sight, and park only in well-lit or designated areas.
Business owners and vendors are encouraged to ensure adequate lighting at their premises, employ security personnel where practical, and maintain secure methods for storing cash and valuables. Businesses are also advised to remain vigilant against counterfeit currency.
Vendors, promoters, and bar operators must comply with all Carnival regulations. Anyone wishing to sell alcoholic beverages must first obtain the necessary approval. The sale or distribution of drinks in glass bottles or metal cans at Carnival events will not be permitted.
The public is urged to report any suspicious or criminal activity to the nearest police station or by calling 911. The Police Administration thanked the public for its continued cooperation and called on residents, returning nationals, and visitors to celebrate responsibly in support of a safe and incident-free Carnival 2026.
