Antigua and Barbuda's expanded closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance network remains on schedule, with installations set to be completed by the final week of August, the government has confirmed.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant made the announcement during Thursday's post-Cabinet media briefing, stating that Cabinet received a progress update from Public Safety Minister Steadroy "Cutie" Benjamin on the National CCTV Surveillance Programme.
Merchant described the initiative as a major component of the government's broader efforts to enhance public safety and strengthen crime prevention across the twin-island nation.
Significant progress has been made, with 42 strategic locations identified for the installation of high-definition surveillance cameras throughout the country. Camera sites were selected following detailed assessments of traffic patterns, commercial activity, public spaces, and other areas deemed critical to national security and law enforcement operations.
The new cameras will be integrated into the existing surveillance network operated by the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, expanding the force's monitoring capabilities and bolstering its capacity to prevent and investigate crime.
Cabinet endorsed recommendations put forward by the Ministry of Public Safety as the government continues to advance the national surveillance programme toward its August completion target.
