The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local food production through a major agricultural land redistribution programme.
The Ministry of Agriculture has identified and repossessed approximately 682 acres of abandoned and underutilised agricultural land earmarked for redistribution to farmers across the country.
In the first phase of the initiative, 50 vetted farmers will receive allocations. Each farmer will initially operate under a six-month probationary agreement, with eligibility for longer-term occupancy contingent on demonstrated productivity.
Cabinet has also approved continued restrictions on agricultural concessions, ensuring they are granted exclusively to registered farmers and fisherfolk who are actively engaged in production.
Officials say the programme forms a core part of the government's broader strategy to reduce dependence on food imports, expand local agricultural output, and strengthen national food security.
