The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has announced comprehensive security measures for Carnival 2026, assuring residents and visitors of a safe and enjoyable festival as the island prepares for celebrations running July 25 to August 4.
The Police Administration will significantly increase its operational presence throughout the carnival period, deploying enhanced mobile and foot patrols, high-visibility policing, and random stop-and-search operations at major events and venues across the island.
A zero-tolerance approach to weapons will be strictly enforced throughout the season. Anyone found carrying or in possession of an illegal firearm, ammunition, or any offensive weapon — including knives, machetes, cleavers, scissors, pieces of iron, wood, or any object intended to cause harm — will be arrested.
The wearing of ski masks is also prohibited during Carnival 2026. Individuals found violating this restriction may face police action in accordance with the law.
Vendors, promoters, and bar operators are advised to comply with all established regulations governing carnival activities. Those wishing to sell alcoholic beverages must first obtain the necessary approval. The sale or distribution of beverages in glass bottles or metal cans at carnival events will not be permitted.
The Police Administration has also issued a series of personal safety tips for the public to follow throughout the carnival season:
Residents and visitors are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and avoid unnecessary risks. They should refrain from displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewellery in public, carry only what cash is needed, and use electronic payment methods where possible.
Caution is advised when using ATMs — particularly late at night. Members of the public are urged to shield their PIN and never accept assistance from strangers at ATM locations. Walking alone in isolated or poorly lit areas, especially after events, should be avoided; travelling in pairs or groups is recommended.
Distractions such as mobile phones or headphones at high volume while walking in public also pose a safety risk and should be minimised. Those attending events with children or elderly relatives are asked to keep them in sight at all times and to establish a designated meeting point in the event of separation.
Homeowners are reminded to secure all doors and windows before leaving and to ensure adequate lighting is left on where possible. Motorists should lock their vehicles at all times, never leave keys in the ignition, and avoid leaving handbags, phones, jewellery, wallets, or other valuables visible inside parked vehicles. Parking in well-lit or designated areas is strongly advised.
Business owners and vendors should ensure adequate lighting, employ security personnel where practical, and use secure methods for storing cash and valuables. The public is also cautioned to be alert to counterfeit currency and to report any suspected incidents to police.
Anyone who observes suspicious behaviour or has information relating to criminal activity is urged to contact the nearest police station or call 911 immediately.
The Royal Police Force thanked the public for its continued partnership and cooperation, extending best wishes to all residents, returning nationals, and visitors for a safe, enjoyable, and incident-free Carnival 2026.
