The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), in collaboration with the Central Board of Health (CBH), has launched an intensive pre-Carnival clean-up initiative across St. John's City ahead of Antigua Carnival 2026. According to Antigua News Room, the operation forms part of broader preparations to ensure the capital is clean, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors during the festivities.
Crew members are conducting the clean-up daily between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. until the initiative is complete. The overnight schedule is designed to allow workers to carry out extensive cleaning activities with minimal disruption to businesses, residents, and motorists.
The operation covers a range of activities aimed at improving the city's appearance and protecting public health. These include the cleaning and washing of drains, removal of debris and accumulated waste, grass cutting and vegetation management, and general cleaning of streets and public spaces.
Upon completion of cleaning in each area, the Central Board of Health will conduct fogging and disinfecting of drains and surrounding areas as part of its ongoing mosquito control and public health programme.
The NSWMA is urging the public to support the initiative by disposing of waste responsibly, refraining from littering, and helping to maintain clean streets, drains, and public spaces. Officials emphasised that every individual's contribution plays an important role in preserving the improvements being made throughout the city.
The Authority has committed to providing regular updates on completed areas, upcoming locations, and overall progress of the clean-up through its Facebook page as the initiative moves forward.
