Prime Minister Gaston Browne has extended condolences to the Government and people of Qatar following the death of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir of the State of Qatar. Browne also issued a broader tribute on behalf of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), which he chairs.
In a letter addressed to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, Browne conveyed the sympathies of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda.
"On behalf of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest condolences to Your Highness, the Royal Family, and the people of the State of Qatar on the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir," Browne wrote.
The Prime Minister described the late Father Emir as a visionary statesman whose leadership transformed Qatar into a modern and influential nation, while strengthening its role in promoting regional peace, economic development and international cooperation. He offered prayers for strength and comfort to the Royal Family and the Qatari people as they mourn the loss of one of the country's most influential leaders.
In a separate statement issued in his capacity as Chairman of the OECS Authority, Browne spoke on behalf of the Heads of Government of the OECS, honouring Sheikh Hamad's legacy and his contributions to global development. The regional leaders noted that under his leadership, Qatar evolved from a small Gulf state into a leading centre for innovation, diplomacy, education, investment and economic growth.
The statement also highlighted the Father Emir's commitment to peaceful dialogue, humanitarian assistance and sustainable development, along with his significant investments in education and scientific research.
"The OECS recognises the Father Emir's life as one of remarkable achievement. His belief that vision, strategic planning, investment in human capital and engagement with the global community can redefine a nation's destiny resonates deeply with our own aspirations for sustainable development, resilience and shared prosperity," the statement read.
The OECS Heads of Government further praised Sheikh Hamad's dedication to international cooperation, saying his leadership continues to inspire developing nations seeking long-term prosperity through bold reforms and strategic investment.
Prime Minister Browne reaffirmed the OECS' solidarity with the people and leadership of Qatar, expressing confidence that the values championed by the Father Emir would continue to guide the country's future. The Government of Antigua and Barbuda joined the international community in extending sincere condolences to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Royal Family, and the Government and people of Qatar.
