Former St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is recovering well following a successful back surgery, according to Antigua News Room, which published a personal statement from the veteran Caribbean statesman.
In the statement, Douglas expressed gratitude for the outcome of the procedure, which addressed severe pain in the lumbar-sacral area of his spine. He traced the root cause to a life-threatening motor vehicle accident in 1988 that caused serious spinal injuries, leading to a first surgical intervention on his cervical spine in 2003, and now this most recent procedure.
"I am pleased to report that the procedure was highly successful, and I have received an excellent and encouraging report from my Neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Anthony K. Frempong-Boadu of NYU Langone Health," Douglas said in his statement.
Douglas, who is himself a medical doctor, said the experience deepened his appreciation for modern medicine and the healthcare professionals who contributed to his recovery. He extended special thanks to the doctors, nurses, therapists, technicians, and all clinical staff involved in his care.
The former prime minister also acknowledged the support of his family, singling out his daughter, Dr. Andrea F. Douglas, as well as friends, colleagues, constituents, and well-wishers from across the region and beyond. He described their prayers and encouragement as a tremendous source of strength during the period.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Douglas offered a message of hope to others facing health challenges. "Healing is a process that requires patience, perseverance, and purpose," he said, urging those confronting illness to remain steadfast and trust the process.
Douglas confirmed he is progressing well and remains optimistic. He reaffirmed his commitment to continuing in public service, stating he looks forward with renewed strength to serving the people of the Federation.
