A 24-year-old Vincentian national has been fined $8,000 after pleading guilty to a series of offences stemming from a hit-and-run collision that left national cyclist Tahje Browne with serious injuries, according to Antigua Observer.
Kishroy Harry was sentenced by Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel after admitting to dangerous driving, driving without a valid driver's licence, driving without the owner's consent, and driving without insurance. The charges arose from a collision on Sir Sydney Walling Highway on June 20th.
Harry was fined $2,000 on each of the four charges, with the sentences to run concurrently. He has five months to pay the total sum or face two months' imprisonment in default on each count.
In determining the sentence, the court weighed several aggravating factors, including Harry's decision to flee the scene and the severity of Browne's injuries. Mitigating factors — among them Harry's previous good character, expressed remorse, and guilty plea — were also taken into consideration.
The court declined to award compensation, ruling that any claim for damages must be pursued through the High Court.
As reported by Antigua Observer, Browne was struck while cycling on the highway, after which Harry fled without stopping to render assistance. He was arrested the following day after authorities intercepted him as he attempted to leave the country for St Vincent.
