Construction of a new cargo port in Barbuda is set to begin within the next 60 days, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced Saturday, with equipment to be mobilized to the sister island imminently.
According to Antigua News Room, Browne made the announcement during an appearance on the Browne and Browne Show, describing the long-planned project as a key step toward improving the movement of goods to and from Barbuda while supporting the island's expanding economy.
"We'll be mobilizing equipment within the next 60 days to start the cargo port in Barbuda," Browne said.
The prime minister said the cargo port is part of a broader infrastructure investment programme on the island, which also encompasses road upgrades, housing developments and improvements at the airport.
"The roads are moving well. The airport is moving well," Browne said, adding that work on the airport's terminal building is also advancing.
Browne said the government remains committed to investing in Barbuda's long-term development and building the infrastructure needed to accommodate increased economic activity.
On housing, the prime minister pointed to ongoing residential construction on the island, including homes being built with funding from a grant provided by China.
Taken together, Browne said the combined investments are designed to strengthen transportation links, expand housing stock and position Barbuda to support future residential and commercial growth.
