Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced plans for a major redevelopment of the Perry Bay area, encompassing new housing, waterfront commercial lots and a marina. According to Antigua News Room, the announcement was made Sunday during an appearance on the Brown and Brown Show.
Browne said the project will transform approximately 15 acres of reclaimed land, with a central focus on improving living conditions for residents currently occupying informal housing in the area.
"What we want to do is create some housing so that the people who live in Perry Bay, some of them live in squalor. We want to take them out of squalor and put them into some nice units there," Browne said.
The redevelopment is planned as a mixed-use development, integrating residential units with commercial spaces along the waterfront. "We're going to have some commercial lots right on the waterfront and possibly a marina as well," the prime minister said.
Browne added that the existing road network in the area will require reconfiguration to maximise the site's development potential. "We're going to move the road at the back too, in front of those houses," he said.
The prime minister also gave assurances that local fishermen would not be adversely affected by the redevelopment. "Obviously, [we will] make sure we do not harm the place's fishermen," Browne said.
He described the Perry Bay initiative as one of several major projects under the government's national development programme, alongside planned developments at Fort James, Darkwood Beach, Christian Valley and the Diamonds Agro-Industrial Park.
Browne said the government's approach prioritises delivering individual projects rather than relying solely on long-term development plans, with each initiative contributing to broader national economic and social development goals.
