The Ministry of Education has made clear that students entering secondary school will not be reassigned simply because they or their parents prefer a different institution.
Director of Education Clare Browne delivered the message following the release of the 2026 Grade Six National Assessment results, stating that transfer requests will only be considered where the Ministry identifies an administrative error in the placement process.
Parents who believe such an error has occurred have one week to submit a written request for review. The application must be endorsed by the child's primary school and received by next Friday. The Director of Education's office will assess all submissions, and parents can expect a response within two weeks.
Browne noted that the Ministry had already received transfer requests before the examination results were even published. He urged parents to trust the placement system, emphasising that every secondary school in Antigua and Barbuda is capable of delivering a quality education. Student placements, he explained, are determined through a structured process managed by the Measurement and Evaluation Unit.
Acting Assistant Director of Education and head of the Measurement and Evaluation Unit, Jevelle Gore-Hurst, reported encouraging results from this year's assessment. Of the 1,284 students who sat the exam, 89% achieved acceptable results, with more than half placed in the top academic tier.
