The University of the West Indies (UWI) has issued a public warning about a fraudulent website falsely representing the regional institution and collecting personal information from unsuspecting visitors.
According to Antigua News Room, the university confirmed in a public advisory that the site is not authorised, affiliated with, or endorsed by UWI, despite using the institution's name and branding without permission.
The fake website contains a form requesting personal details, including names, email addresses and telephone numbers. UWI stressed that any information submitted through the site is not received by the university.
The institution is urging anyone who may have interacted with the website to exercise caution regarding any follow-up emails, phone calls or messages claiming to originate from UWI. Visitors are advised to refrain from sharing any additional personal or financial information.
Prospective students and other stakeholders are reminded that official information about UWI programmes, admissions and partnerships is available exclusively through the university's authorised websites, including its campuses in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, the Global Campus and the university's regional headquarters.
UWI confirmed it has reported the matter to international cybercrime and law enforcement authorities. The university has also initiated legal and technical efforts to have the fraudulent site taken offline while working with partners to minimise its impact.
Anyone who visited the website or holds information about its operation is encouraged to contact the university directly at [email protected].
UWI said it remains committed to protecting its students, partners and institutional reputation and will take all necessary steps to address the incident.
