Dear Editor,
As reported by Antigua News Room, a concerned resident is calling on Social Security to significantly increase its funeral disbursement payments, arguing that the current amount fails to meet the realities of today's economic climate.
The letter writer draws attention to a bill recently debated and passed in the Senate, which provides remuneration of up to $20,000 to the immediate family members of individuals who die as a result of a fatal accident. While acknowledging the limitations of any financial compensation in the face of grief, the writer welcomed the legislation as a positive step.
"Although $20,000 cannot return the deceased to life, neither will it erase the forever lasting pain and agony that will be experienced by the loved ones of the deceased, and perhaps it may not be enough to cover the funeral expenses — at least the $20,000 is a start," the letter states.
The writer is now urging Social Security to follow suit by raising its funeral disbursement amount from $2,500 to at least $7,500. With inflation driving up the cost of living across the board, funerals have become an increasingly significant financial burden for bereaved families.
"Times are extremely hard and we are all impacted by inflation. Funerals are not cheap," the writer argues, describing the current $2,500 disbursement as "a drop in the bucket" and "a disrespect to the deceased and their family."
