The Antiguan government is moving forward with plans to transform Darkwood Beach into a public park, an initiative designed to preserve one of the country's most celebrated coastlines while expanding recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
According to Antigua News Room, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant announced the project during Thursday's post-Cabinet media briefing, revealing that Cabinet had received an update on the proposed redevelopment as part of the government's broader national development agenda.
"Cabinet also received an update on plans to transform the Darkwood Beach into a public park that will preserve and enhance one of the country's most treasured national spaces while providing residents and visitors with improved recreational amenities," Merchant said.
The Darkwood Beach proposal was considered alongside separate plans for the redevelopment of the Perry Bay-Keeling Point area. Merchant stressed, however, that each project will advance through its own distinct planning process.
Cabinet agreed that concept designs for the Darkwood Beach project will be presented to ministers as planning progresses. Merchant also confirmed that the government is committed to ensuring development proceeds in an environmentally responsible manner.
To that end, Cabinet has directed that a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment be completed before any construction is permitted to begin.
"The assessments will inform the planning process and ensure that environmental considerations are fully integrated into the final designs," Merchant said.
Merchant added that the environmental review will help shape the project's final design while safeguarding the beach's natural characteristics throughout the development process.
No construction timeline or specific details regarding proposed recreational facilities were disclosed at the briefing. Merchant framed the initiative as part of the government's broader commitment to preserving important public spaces and strengthening recreational infrastructure for both citizens and tourists.
