Prime Minister Gaston Browne has put forward a proposal to expand the role of students in maintaining public facilities, arguing that schools should place greater emphasis on practical skills and community service.
According to Antigua News Room, Mr. Browne outlined the initiative on his weekend radio programme, suggesting that students attending schools near the Potters Sports Complex could assist in maintaining parts of the facility, including its swimming pool and landscaped areas.
The Prime Minister said the programme would equip young people with practical skills that could open pathways to careers in pool maintenance, landscaping, and grounds management.
Mr. Browne also proposed that every school establish a plant nursery to grow ornamental plants for use on campuses and in surrounding communities. He said the initiative would improve public spaces while teaching students valuable horticultural skills.
Structured programmes, he added, would encourage students to take greater responsibility for community assets, reducing dependence on contractors and fostering civic pride.
The proposal forms part of a broader effort to integrate classroom learning with hands-on experience and active community involvement.
